Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba congratulated former President Donald Trump, who was confirmed to be elected in the 47th U.S. presidential election, and said he would further strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance, Kyodo News reported.
"I sincerely congratulate Trump on his victory and I also pay tribute to the American people's choice of democracy," Ishiba told reporters at the prime minister's residence in Tokyo.
"We want to further enhance the U.S.-Japan alliance by closely cooperating with Trump," he said, adding, "We will try to have a point of contact in the future."
Asked about the progress, including talks with Trump, Prime Minister Ishiba replied, "We are currently coordinating, so we don't say specifically one day."
The Japanese government has set and pushed to hold early talks with Prime Minister Ishiba no matter who is elected in the U.S. presidential election to strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance.
The Mainichi Shimbun reported on the 2nd that Prime Minister Ishiba visited the U.S. later this month and is considering talks with the president-elect, citing a Japanese government official.
In this regard, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya also said, "If the next U.S. president decides, we will try to hold early talks with Prime Minister Ishiba."
