A green light has been turned on for the promotion of the Wiryegwacheon Metropolitan Railway from Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do to Gangnam and Wirye New Town in Seoul.
In this regard, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said that the Wirye Gwacheon Metropolitan Railway Project has passed the Korea Development Institute's Civil Qualification Survey.
The Wirye Gwacheon Line connects the Government Gwacheon Government Complex, the Legal Town in Songpa-gu, Seoul, and the Wirye New Town from east to west, and it is a private investment project with a total length of 28.25km that extends north to Apgujeong-dong, Seoul.
Earlier, Wirye and Cheonseon submitted the initial proposal to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport at the Daewoo Engineering & Construction Consortium in 2021, and the government launched a civil qualification survey in September 2022 after reviewing the proposal and consulting with local governments.
In particular, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to preemptively resolve traffic difficulties through new railway lines, as 86,000 people are scheduled to move into nine public housing districts within the project's sphere of influence.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it will speed up the project with the aim of completing a strategic environmental impact assessment next year and selecting preferred negotiators and starting negotiations through a third-party proposal announcement.
