Climate Change Conference Opens...Concerns over Trump's election results

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) opened in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

At this meeting, the main agenda is to raise the target of developing countries' climate crisis response funds from $100 billion to $1 trillion.

Simon Stiel, secretary-general of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, stressed that setting new funding targets is not a charitable initiative, but in the interests of all countries.

However, President-elect Trump of the United States, the second-largest carbon emitter, will withdraw from the climate agreement, and the economic situation in each country is not good due to the war between Ukraine and Gaza, which will not be easy to reach an agreement to raise funds, Reuters said.

U.S. President Biden, who is about to end his term, as well as Chinese President Xi Jinping and European Commission President von der Leyen were absent from this year's General Assembly.

The current global average temperature is 1.3 degrees Celsius higher than it was before industrialization, just 0.2 degrees below the Paris Agreement target of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

According to a U.N. report, global carbon emissions must be reduced by 42% by 2030 to meet the 1.5 degree Celsius goal.
