Didier Pisseme, an entrepreneur and former chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed as Haiti's new prime minister, turned lawless by gang violence.
Former Prime Minister Gary Connell, who has been at odds with some members of the transitional committee launched in April to prepare for Haiti's presidential election, was dismissed more than five months after taking office.
At the inauguration in Port-au-Prince, the new prime minister, Didier, promised to hold "inclusive, transparent and democratic elections."
In Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, it has been difficult for residents to live a basic life since the July 2021 killing of President Jovnel Moise, as armed gangs have seized control of much of the capital Port-au-Prince and expanded their power to neighboring areas.
"More than 5.4 million people, half of Haiti's population, face starvation," the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said in a press release in September, while the International Organization for Migration (IOM) tentatively counted more than 700,000 displaced people in Haiti.
Displaced people in Korea are those who have been forced to leave their usual residence or home due to disputes or natural disasters, but have not crossed the border.
