"Cancel the order to join the army"...Occupying Israel's ultra-Orthodox road, 'extreme opposition' [Now News]

Israeli ultra-Orthodox Jews protested to occupy roads in protest against the government's draft order on the 17th local time, local media reported.

According to the Times of Israel, ultra-Orthodox "Haredi" members blocked highway 4 near Bneibrak, east of Tel Aviv, in both directions and demanded that the enlistment order be revoked.

Earlier on the 15th, Israeli Defense Minister Katz approved an order to enlist 7,000 Haredis.

The Ministry of National Defense first sent a warrant to 1,000 of them.

The Haredis have been exempt from military service since their founding in 1948 for protecting culture and academics that were almost wiped out by the Holocaust, but they are strongly protesting when they were included in the draft in June by a Supreme Court ruling that the exemption was unfair.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing for further legislation to exempt ultra-Orthodox parties from military service after they threatened to leave the coalition government.

Some believe that former Defense Secretary Yoav Galant's push for their draft served as a background for the replacement.

The draft order for 7,000 people was decided a day before Galant was fired earlier this month, the Times of Israel said.
