The U.S. government has confirmed that Russia has test-fired a new intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) against Ukraine, and says it will be able to mount a nuclear warhead if the missile is modified.

At a briefing on the 21st local time, Deputy Defense Minister Sabrina Singh said, "Russia confirmed that it fired an IRBM as an experiment," adding, "This IRBM was based on Russia's RS-26 Lubez Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) model."

"This is a new form of deadly force deployed in action," Singh said, adding it was certainly a matter of concern for us.

"It can certainly be modified to carry other forms of conventional weapons or nuclear warheads," Singh said, describing the missile as the ultimate missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

It also added that just before the launch, Russia notified the launch plan in advance through a "nuclear risk reduction channel" between the U.S. and Russia.Russian President Vladimir Putin

said the same day that Russia used a new hypersonic intermediate range ballistic missile to attack Ukraine in response to Western hostilities.

"We tested one of the latest Russian intermediate-range missile systems," Putin continued, introducing that the hypersonic missile, which is not equipped with a nuclear warhead, was named "Oresynik."
