◇ Profit line: Battery time has come. It's a segment that we're together every Friday. Batteries Today, you are an ophthalmologist to reduce your knowledge of health so that you can recharge your exhausted physical strength for a week. We are with Director Kim Sun-young of Healing An. In today's Battery, we will learn about dry eyes and eye health, which are chronic diseases of modern people.

◆Choi Soo-young: Dry eyes. We often express dry eyes like this. Actually, the name is a little long, but please explain the tear layer unstable disease.

◈Kim Sun-young: I think we may have dryness because your tears have decreased, but the tear layer doesn't give it to us, but there are three kinds of tears, not water. There are three types: mucus, water, and oil, and even when the three are not in harmony, tears can easily dry up. So when we blink, our eyes look very shiny because it's actually oily.

◇Lee Ik-seon: But what's the cause? The cause of this tear layer instability disease called dry eyes.

◈Kim Sun-young: There are a wide variety of causes. Sadly, the biggest reason is aging. It's a bit sad, but dry eyes are happening a lot especially for women in their late 40s, and there are a lot of people who lack sleep these days. So most people with sleep disorders have dry skin. So, there are not many such people or lack of nutrition, but there are many people who suffer from lack of nutrition or allergies. There are many people who continue to complain of dry eyes after surgery, ophthalmic surgery, LASIK LASEK, or cataract surgery due to autoimmune disease or thyroid disease depression.

◆Choi Soo-young: You talked about women, but in terms of proportion, which one is more male or female?

◈ Kim Sun-young: There are a lot more women. Men have a lot of oil on their eyelids. Why do men say that their faces get a little bit oily? You have a lot of oil on your eyelids.

◇Lee Ik-seon: I thought it might be more because there are more women in it. I thought it might be because there are things like eye shadow or powder when we put on makeup.

◈ Kim Sun-young: That can be related, and for those with severe dryness, it can be more painful because the makeup doesn't wash off quickly when it's in.

◇Lee Ik-seon: My eyes are itchy because of dry eyes. We're doing a broadcast in a cold state, but we use artificial tears. I was going to ask you later, but I'll just ask you in advance. If you use a disposable artificial tear, it's usually told to drop one or two drops, but I've always wondered how many times a day it's possible and why not three or four drops at a time.

◈ Kim Sun-young: Even a drop of those artificial tears actually leaves only one-tenth of the eye. It just goes to the sides like this. That's why one drop is enough. You can do two or three drops. It's all gone anyway. And I'm told to put it in 10 times a day for severe people, but it's harmless if you put it in a lot, but you don't have to put it in to get rid of your tears, but if it's stiff, it's better to put it in.

◆Choi Soo-young: But you mentioned three elements earlier. Oil, water, mucus. What do you mean by saying that the reasons for the lack of moisture are different?

◈Kim Sun-young: Most people in Korea lack water because they are water-based. That's often the case for us. Women who have undergone menopause or ophthalmic surgery lack tears, and sleeplessness can reduce to 90% of the tears that are supposed to come out. But for those who are stuck in gas, the concept first came out about 10 years ago when I was a resident. So, clogged oil glands are a big reason for this, so when I analyzed dry patients, up to 80% of them are clogged, and there is a program that squeezes the clogged oil. Or if you apply warm poultice at home, it gets better. These are all treatments that break through oil. That's why I don't have enough oil, but people who have good stye usually have that kind of personality. It's not that there are long oil glands, but there are a lot of people who are genetically like that or men who don't wash their eyelids well. Men don't usually get dryness, but when I see them, they have clogged eyelids, so there are a lot of people who complain about dryness, and I ask them every time. If you ask me to use foam cleanser, what's foam cleanser? There are people like this. They never wash their face with soap. You don't even do it on your eyes, so you have to cleanse your eyelids, but for those who don't do it, it's called closing my eyelids because they're clogged. The oil glands on the eyelids are often closed. More than 80% of people in their 70s are blocked, and sadly, ticks live there. There is also a paper saying that the probability of ticks buying ticks is 70% and that ticks living in their 80s is 100%.

◇Lee Ik-seon: Is that why you get a lot of eye boogers?

◈Kim Sun-young: That's right. The edges of the eyelids are also red, and if you look closely at the edges, there are cases where such ticks live among the elderly who are a little red.

◆Choi Soo-young: Then you just have to wash your face very well.

◈Kim Sun-young: Even though you have eyebrows, it's good to think of shampooing your hair to get rid of dead skin cells.

◆Choi Soo-young: Luckily, I am good at using foam cleansing.

◇ Lee Ik-seon: But normally the location of the tear glands is, so as far as I know, the tear glands are located in the center of the eye and the area where the eyelashes are slightly pressed in the lower part of the eye. But isn't it one place?

◈Kim Sun-young: It's similar. It's a sewer where tears come down. The place where the tears come out is the outside. After the tears come out here, it flows in this direction toward the nose.

◇ Profit line: It's flowing down in the shape of a y.

◈Kim Sun-young: So it's connected to the nose, so the inside is the sewer. What's itchy all the time is that there's something piled up in the sewer.

◆ Choi Soo-young: Because we talk about dry eyes so often, we don't feel it coming heavy. So, I heard there are severe and mild cases. How do you tell that apart?

◈Kim Sun-young: Actually, mild is just my poor quality of life. It's just a little uncomfortable, and when I wake up in the morning, it hurts, and when I watch my cell phone or TV for a long time, it's a little cold, so the quality of life decreases, but there are actually severe cases. Severe cases are called corneas on the eyes, so the black pupils on the outside are actually transparent. The black one looks black because of the iris, but the transparent membrane continues to scratch. So, scratches can occur, and even infections can occur if bacteria enter it. But if you get infected, it's not common anymore. If scratches occur, scratches can cause temporary visual impairment, but if scratches occur repeatedly, the corneal epithelium will continue to heal, scratch, heal, and scratch, causing the corneal epithelium to become bumpy. Then this could cause it to permanently look a little smudged and look like two or three.

◇Lee Ik-seon: Then I don't know if it's hurt or not without necessarily going to the ophthalmologist for that.

◈ Kim Sun-young: I don't know if there is a wound, but usually, there is a wound when it hurts. But when you open your eyes in the morning, it hurts a lot. If you say you're always sick, you're probably almost hurt.

◇Lee Ik-seon: Can you fix this?

◈Kim Sun-young: It's hard to cure, but with lifestyle correction, we need to warm up the eyelid oil glands and get a good night's sleep. But it may be easier to come to the eye clinic to heal your tears than to sleep well.

◇ Lee Ik-seon: Let me ask you a question. "I cry a lot." I'm not coming out because I'm sad. Glasses are also sprayed like a sprayer. What kind of disease is this? For your information, I'm a 67-year-old male. ’

◈Kim Sun-young: Yes, you said that there is a sewer connected to the nose where the tears are going down. It's very small. It's narrow, but we use the sewer for the rest of our lives. That's why it's going to get stuck. However, there are times when it's temporarily clogged, and there are times when it's completely clogged because it's completely fattened. So if it's jammed, you'll be complaining of this symptom for more than a year. It needs to be drilled.

◇ Lee Ik-seon: Is it an operation? Is it a procedure?

◈Kim Sun-young: These days, it's like a laser surgery to put an endoscope in it and make a laser piercing. It's possible there. It's simple these days.

◇Lee Ik-seon: There are questions on YouTube. "I'm prescribed artificial tears for dry eyes on a regular basis, but I get a lot of foreign body sensation in my eyes. Why is this? It's especially bad when you wake up in the morning. ’ That's the question.

◈Kim Sun-young: When you use tear drops for dry eyes. It only works for five minutes. It's the same as spraying mist on our faces and trying to moisturize them.

◇ Proficiency line: But mist is only good when you spray it, because you feel dry more quickly.

◈Kim Sun-young: That's right. Because it's the same as that, there are various artificial tears, but these days, there are also oil-containing tear pills. That can last a little longer. And there are inflammatory drugs such as Lestasis and Dicuas, or tear drugs with mucus-producing ingredients that can last longer. These days, there is also a rebapimide made of eye drops that protect the gastric mucosa. It's a new drug, and it's okay, but I haven't used it a lot anymore. Anyway, there is a limit to treating it with artificial tears or other drugs.

◆Choi Soo-young: You mentioned earlier that there are much more women in the ratio of men and women, so of course there is aging in the more vulnerable age group, but when should we start to see them become more vulnerable?

◈ Kim Sun-young: Sadly, menopause is also known as menopause. There are a lot of women who came here. I think almost 100 percent of people in their 50s are in my experience. But if you say it's moist now, the road to tears is blocked, or anyway, the function of the tear glands seems to be very poor.

◆Choi Soo-young: Then is there a way to self-diagnose the diagnosis?

◈Kim Sun-young: There is an easy way to diagnose this. In ophthalmology, we look at the time when the tears break and we measure it by the time of tear destruction, and we can do that alone. It's okay if you tell them not to blink and keep their eyes open for 10 seconds like a snowball fight.

◇ Lee Ik-seon: While you're talking, I'll do 10 seconds.

◈Kim Sun-young: It's not easy. My eyes shouldn't hurt for 10 seconds, but if I open them for 10 seconds and my eyes hurt, the eye barrier is broken.

◇ Profit line: It can float, but it's not comfortable.

◈Kim Sun-young: The tear film broke at the moment it hurt, but for those with severe symptoms, it breaks in just one second, not three seconds.

◇ Lee Ik-seon: It's a question from the listener. "I have a lot of eye booger inside my eyes, but I can't see it well because my eyes are tired, and I have a lot of eye booger in the shower. What are the causes and solutions? They said that.

◈Kim Sun-young: Now there are two reasons for eye boogers. If the eye booger is yellow, there is inflammation, and the white one is allergic inflammation. So the two things are a little different. If you get too much eye booger, you'll get eye disease, so you should go to an ophthalmologist. If you get eye booger all the time, you may have a chronic bacterial infection there, so it's good to check with an ophthalmologist to see if the eyelid is oily. And if you have an allergic constitution, you may always have white eye boogers and thread-like eye boogers.

◇Lee Ik-seon: But I've seen elderly people who don't have hard eyes and keep appearing yellow like mucus. Is that an inflammation?

◈ Kim Sun-young: If it's yellow now, then there can be chronic infection. We told you that ticks live well. It's Demodex, and you might be surprised to hear that it's a tick, but it's a bacteria that lives a lot on acne skin. So even with that, it can be constantly inflamed.

◇Lee Ik-seon: Then how to prevent it is to cleanse your face as you said before?

◈Kim Sun-young: Yes, the best thing is that there should be no oil to feed on my eyelid oil, but it shouldn't be clogged. If you're stuck, you can eat it and there's too much oil on your skin, so ticks can live. So it's best to use a warm compress often to get it pierced, and if you buy it now, you have to kill it, so you can use eyelid sanitizer or something additionally.

◆Choi Soo-young: But you said that mild cases are mild to the extent that you don't have any discomfort in your daily life. But since it's mild, I've been leaving it like this, but it can cause side effects. Then what kind of side effects can there be?

◈Kim Sun-young: As I said before, the cornea can get bumpy. If you repeat peeling and healing again, the cornea becomes bumpy, and when you perform cataract surgery, the cornea is not smooth and there are irregular astigmatism. People like that might be a little blinding. And if it's too severe, it can cause turbidity. From the outside, the blood vessels on the whites are very red, or once the blood vessels are widened, they don't shrink once they stretch like a rubber band.

◇Lee Ik-seon: Yes, I see. She's a woman in her 50s. I thought presbyopia must have come. My eyes are always cold. Then is it dry eyes? But why do I keep crying when I'm dry? 'I keep crying to the point where the corners of my eyes are discolored,' the listener texted.

◈Kim Sun-young: Yes, that's right. There are a lot. When we cry a lot, we distinguish people who cry a lot or don't. A lot of people keep coming from home. And it doesn't hurt. But if you cry a lot, especially when it's cold when you go outside, you don't have any tears. That's why the tears break quickly, so the cornea is especially weak because of the cold wind. It's more stimulating, so reflective tears flow through the stimulation. So when we cry, there are tears that flow normally and there are tears that come out reflexively, so the tears that come out when we are sad are also different. The location is also different. So, there are no tears that are supposed to come out automatically, but only reflective tears have developed too much. That's why a lot of stimulated tears come out. So, rather, you are a patient with dry eyes who are sensitive to irritation. If you treat dry eyes, you may prefer to cry when you go outside.

◆Choi Soo-young: You mentioned the poultice earlier, but besides that, it's a lot better if you take care of it on a daily basis and you can also prevent it. Is there something like this?

◈Kim Sun-young: First of all, this is very difficult, but you have to sleep well. It's so important to sleep for 7 hours, and for those who sleep less than that, tears give you a lot. And the second one is just a habit. We watch a lot of things these days. Whether it's a computer or a cell phone, I often read something, but I don't want to miss the moment when I read it, so especially when we watch movies with subtitles, it hurts my eyes even more. It's because I have to keep reading it, so I don't blink because I don't want to miss it. Then, of course, there is much more time for the snow to evaporate, so it's much better. And we have to close our eyes for the oil on our eyelids to come out. When you close it tightly, the oil on the eyelids comes out of the mybom gland. So it's good to close your eyes tightly when you blink, so if your eyes hurt too much but you don't have any medicine for tears, it's good to close your eyes tightly and open them, or it'll be helpful to push your eyes above or below your eyelids with your hands. Then the oil comes out.

◇ Lee Ik-seon: Then it's related to the season. There are a lot of people who are especially itchy these days. When it dries,

◈Kim Sun-young: Guidelines for the Treatment of Dry Eye The first one is so funny in the guidelines that countless doctors have just gathered in the U.S. for months. Do not change the direction of the heater. Change the direction of the fan and the direction of the heater. Move from my side to the other side. So, it's like there's a huge first guideline in the dry eyes guideline. That's why it also has a significant impact. You have to wear goggles when riding a bike, and the wind can be weak.

◇Lee Ik-seon: There are a lot of people who are into running these days. Then it's better to wear sports goggles if you're a little older than to do nothing when running.

◆Choi Soo-young: This is what our writer wrote. I introduced this article from a health journal. If you don't have artificial tears when your eyes are dry again, your eyes will be moist if you shout, 'Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehecheesecheesecheesecheesecheesecheekcheekcheekcheekhehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe Is it just a wrong article?

◈Kim Sun-young: I've tried this before. But I don't know why, but I feel like I've gotten better. It makes you smile and put strength on your eyelids. Like this, it feels like there's a little bit of weave of my spring glands that come up from my muscles.

◆Choi Soo-young: Since it's a facial exercise, it goes to the eyes naturally.

◇Lee Ik-seon: The listener said, 'I always cry when it gets a little cold. It's not a snoring level, it's dripping. ’ He gave me a text message.

◈Kim Sun-young: This is especially true when there is a lack of oil glands in the tear layer. So people who cry outside cry in the afternoon. For those who say their eyes hurt in the afternoon, those who are sick in the morning have less water. Being sick in the afternoon or crying outside often lacks a layer of oil. So, it's hard to know if there's a blockage in the spring, so it's good to go to a nearby ophthalmologist and ask them to knit their eyelids. Then it would be good to do a warm compress or a program like that.

◆Choi Soo-young: And there are a lot of people who wear contact lenses. "Can I put in artificial tears when I wear contact lenses?" Some people say that putting artificial tears too often is not good for your eyes,' he texted.

◈Kim Sun-young: Now there is a thick tear medicine called sodium hyaluronate. There is a paper that the tear medicine can cause a little inflammation when it enters the lens, but it is better than stiff. So when it's stiff, the lens has no choice but to keep absorbing water. If you want to keep it soft, you keep taking away your tears. So when you don't have enough tears, I think it would be better to put it in.

◇Lee Ik-seon: You wear a lot of fashion lenses these days. But there are many cases where I do it even if it's not necessary, but I'm really curious about this. Is lens better? Are glasses better?

◈Kim Sun-young: Glasses are better for your eyes. Of course, glasses are the safest, but circle lenses do not provide 10 times more oxygen than regular soft lenses. So wearing circle lenses for a year and wearing soft lenses for a year is much worse than wearing soft lenses for 10 years. But soft lenses have gotten a lot better these days. So compared to before, oxygen transmittance is really good as hard lenses, so ophthalmologists had to wear hard lenses. But now, I like soft lenses a lot not to talk about them.

◆Choi Soo-young: I should introduce you to the last text message, but I didn't blink for 3 minutes. Wow, my eyes are healthy. You must be a viewer.

◈Kim Sun-young: I think you're so healthy. That's amazing. My eyes aren't small, are they?

◇ Proficiency line: I see. Actually, please let me know if there is an appropriate interval for the ophthalmology as we are told to get regular checkups at the dentist.

◈Kim Sun-young: The ophthalmologist doesn't actually have a major illness before the age of 40, so you can come if you feel uncomfortable. However, after the age of 40, there is always a glaucoma examination that is also included in the medical examination. I hope you get a glaucoma check-up.

◇Lee Ik-seon: I was with Kim Sun-young of the Department of Health-Delivering Knowledge Battery Healing Eye. Thank you for your words today.
