Russia says it is continuing to push for the deployment of the next generation of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Sergei Karakayev, commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, said in an article published today (27th) in his country's Ministry of Defense magazine that work is continuing to put the latest Sarmat missile system into combat.

The comments come as Russia unveiled its new hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile Oresynik in response to Ukraine's use of Western long-range missiles.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would continue testing new missiles in combat, just as he test-fired Oresynik into Ukraine on the 21st.Commander

Karakayev said the fifth-generation Yars-Avant-Garde missile system has been used for the strategic Missile Army's combat activities, stressing that more than 88% of modern missile technology is included in the strategic Missile Army's combat composition.

However, Reuters noted that Russia's development of Sarmat was being delayed due to testing setbacks and other reasons.

Sarmat is an ICBM called "Satan 2" by NATO, which can carry 10 to 15 nuclear warheads at a time and has a range of 18,000 kilometers.
