The President's Office "We will look at unmarried babies to grow up without discrimination."

Amid the widespread debate over "unmarried childbirth" in the wake of actor Jung Woo-sung's recent out-of-wedlock birth, the presidential office said it will look at all lives, including those born out of wedlock, so that they can grow up healthy and happy without discrimination.

An official from the presidential office told reporters today (28th) that Korea's unmarried fertility rate was 4.7 percent last year, lower than the OECD average of 41.9 percent, but it is correct that it is on the rise.

He then stressed that the government's childcare policy is currently provided based on children, so the support policy is being implemented regardless of whether parents are married or not.

He added that the government's consistent view is that the state will actively protect and support children born in various situations, including single-parent families, and that he will continue to supplement it if there are any missing parts so that such philosophy can be practiced.
