Romania Constitutional Court "re-counts first round of presidential vote"

2024.11.29 AM 12:32
Romania's Constitutional Court has ordered a recount of the first round of the presidential election.

Romania's Constitutional Court said on the 28th local time it had unanimously decided to order all ballots cast in the first round to be re-verified and recounted on the 24th.

In the first round of Romania's presidential election on the 24th, far-right independent candidate Curlin Georgescu won 22.94% of the vote.

As Romania is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union and supports Ukraine, the fact that a far-right, pro-Russian candidate topped the first round of the presidential election was considered a surprise.

Georgescu will hold a runoff election next month on the 8th against Elena Rasconi, the leader of the center-right opposition "Lumania Salvation Union," which came in second with 19.18 percent of the vote.
