As the number of people aged 65 or older exceeded 9 million due to the aging population, Korea's elderly medical expenses reached nearly 50 trillion won last year, or 44 percent of the total medical expenses.
According to last year's Health Insurance Statistical Yearbook published by the National Health Insurance Corporation and the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, medical expenses for senior citizens aged 65 and over were KRW 48.91 trillion, up 6.9% from a year ago.
The elderly population was 9.22 million, 17.9% of the population covered by health insurance, but medical expenses accounted for 44.1%.
The average annual treatment cost for the elderly was 5,434,000 won.
Last year, the total health insurance treatment cost was KRW 110.82 trillion, up 4.7% from a year ago, of which the salary cost was KRW 83.925 trillion, about 75% of the treatment cost.
Last year, the average annual treatment cost per person was 2,155,000 won, and the average monthly treatment cost was 179,601 won.
