Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol said it is true that the recent declaration of emergency martial law and the impeachment of the president have weakened the power of communication between South Korea and the United States.

He also said that it will take time to restore the power of communication, but the diplomatic situation does not seem to be easy ahead of the launch of a new administration in the United States.

Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Strategy and Finance, and Cho Tae-yeol, Minister of Foreign Affairs, exceptionally called only foreign reporters to hold a meeting.

A briefing session was held to calm the decline in international trust and anxiety caused by the recent declaration of emergency martial law and the impeachment of the president.

[Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yeol: I am well aware that there are many doubts at home and abroad about the sustainability of the diplomatic stance that our government has been pushing for under the current impeachment situation]

Minister Cho acknowledged that the incident interfered with communication between South Korea and the U.S., especially with Trump's side as the next president-elect.

It is also true that this has weakened the political momentum of communication that it has built up so far, and it said it needs time to recover.

But he said he would preemptively prepare for a possible U.S.-North Korea deal by a second Trump administration.

It is interpreted as a sign that Trump will prepare in advance for the possibility of starting dialogue between North Korea and the U.S. after taking office.

Minister Cho emphasized maintaining the diplomatic stance, saying that relations between Korea and Japan, which will mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, or Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Korea, which is being prepared on the occasion of the APEC summit, will proceed smoothly.

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Choi Sang-mok also stressed that the domestic economy is getting better little by little even in a difficult situation.

[Choi Sang-mok / Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Strategy and Finance: The volatility of the financial and foreign exchange market, which expanded in the early days of the domestic political situation, is gradually stabilizing as a result of a quick response centered on emergency macroeconomic and financial meetings]

Both the economy and diplomacy are seeking to restore external trust by emphasizing the nation's resilience, but it is unclear whether the international community and financial markets will respond as expected.
