A plant built in Kumamoto, Japan, by Taiwan's TMSC, the top semiconductor manufacturer, began mass production of semiconductors this month, the Asahi Shimbun and Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.
The TSMC Kumamoto Prefecture Plant 1, which opened in February, has been undergoing test production.
TSMC said the plant has completed all process certification and started mass production as planned this month, adding that it will become a stable high-tech semiconductor production base in Japan and contribute to the global semiconductor ecosystem system.
TSMC Plant 1 can produce 55,000 units of 12-16 nano and 22-22 nano semiconductors installed in various products such as smartphones and automobiles per month based on 300mm silicon wafers.
