Trump announces resignation of Trudeau "no tariffs if merged"

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement of his intention to resign, saying, "If Canada merges with the United States, tariffs will disappear."

"Many people in Canada love being the 51st state of the United States," Trump wrote in a post on his social media after Trudeau's announcement of his resignation.

"The United States cannot afford the huge trade deficit and subsidies that Canada needs to survive," he said. "Prime Minister Trudeau was aware of this and resigned."

"If the U.S. and Canada merge, they will be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly hovering around them," he said. "Together, how great a country will be."

Since his previous victory in last year's November 5 presidential election, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports, calling on Canada to address trade balance imbalances and border security issues.
