People's Power welcomed Democratic Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung's suspended prison sentence in the first trial for violating the Public Official Election Act, saying it was a "sacrifice" and paying tribute to the judiciary's decision.
Floor leader Choo Kyung-ho held a press conference and called for the Democratic Party to stop and apologize for the show of force and sedition, saying, "No matter how much bulletproof the bank is built with the power of the giant opposition party, it will not stop the river of justice."
Kwak Kyu-taek, a senior spokesman, said at a press conference that all trials for alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act should be completed within a year after the indictment, but even the first trial sentence came out only two years later, demanding the court's prompt judgment on the rest of the cases, including the perjury teacher charge and the Daejangdong allegation.
Shin Dong-wook, the party's chief spokesman, issued a commentary, saying the trial was conducted solely on evidence and legal principles, stressing that there could be no personal attacks or disobedience to the court.
Immediately after the sentence, ruling party lawmakers, including Kim Ki-hyun, Na Kyung-won, Ahn Cheol Soo, and Kim Yong-tae, welcomed the court ruling on social media and said, "It is time to take care of the people's livelihood, which is the essence of politics."
