There are constant drowsy driving accidents.

There are an average of more than 6,000 drowsy driving accidents a year, especially in November.

Reporter Lee Hyung-won covered the reason and countermeasures.

{환} is no exception.

These are all ridiculous accidents caused by drivers dozing off.

Such drowsy driving is difficult to respond to, which is likely to lead to a major accident.

The problem is that the number of related accidents is increasing.

The average number of cases per year is about 6,000, but last year it was close to 7,300.

It increased by 35% from 2021 and more than 20% from 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In particular, drowsy accidents were concentrated in November.

[Choi Kwan / Senior Researcher at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance's Traffic Safety and Culture Institute: There are many festivals, traffic increases.... (In particular) we start turning on the car heater in November. When the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, you feel tired and drowsy..]

The institute emphasized the need to introduce DMS, a driver monitoring system, to prevent accidents.

DMS is a device that wakes drivers up by sounding an alarm when they close their eyes for more than three seconds, and Korea is only available as an option for luxury vehicles.

As some studies have shown that this device can reduce accident mortality by one-third, it has been proposed to make it mandatory like in Europe.

He also urged regular ventilation as increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the car causes drowsiness.
