The Fair Trade Commission has launched sanctions against Coupang, which is suspected of preventing consumers from terminating their membership while operating paid membership and using eye trickery in raising membership prices.
The Fair Trade Commission sent a review report containing the opinion of sanctions, believing that Coupang, Naver, and Market Kurly violated the e-commerce law by operating a paid membership and operating the service until the end of the month without refunding the difference even if consumers apply for cancellation.
In particular, the Fair Trade Commission believes that Coupang has used an eye trick that it considers to have agreed to increase the membership price by pressing the payment button while raising the membership price.
The FTC is investigating allegations that Coupang sold Coupang Play and Coupang Eats free delivery services to membership, and that it transferred promotional costs to subcontractors while holding discounts on some underperforming self-brand products.
Coupang Eats, a Coupang subsidiary, is also under investigation by the FTC for forcing its stores to match food prices and discounts to the same level as other delivery apps.
