The abolition of the handset distribution law after 10 years is expected to reduce the burden on consumers to purchase mobile phones.

The Korea Communications Commission and the Ministry of Science and ICT expected that competition for subsidies from operators will be activated today (26th) when the bill to abolish the Tong Tong Act is passed at the plenary session of the National Assembly.

In addition, it is predicted that the elimination of regulations prohibiting unfair discrimination of subsidies based on the type of subscription or pricing plan will enable various marketing strategies that can benefit users.

However, he explained that regulations prohibiting discrimination against vulnerable people such as the elderly and the disabled are maintained, including the "optional agreement discount" system that gives discounts to users who do not receive subsidies.

Kim Tae-kyu, acting chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, said, "The burden of household communication costs will be reduced, and we will carefully watch the related situation to ensure that the distribution market remains sound."

Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-im also said he will continue to push for policies to ease the burden of household communication costs, such as strengthening the competitiveness of affordable phone operators and revitalizing used mobile phone transactions.
