The government has appointed an ambassador for international financial cooperation to prevent a decline in external credibility due to the December 3 emergency martial law and political instability.
This is the second appointment of an ambassador for international financial cooperation since 2017, when former President Park Geun Hye was impeached.
The ambassador for international financial cooperation is Choi Jong-gu, former chairman of the Financial Services Commission, with a one-year term.
The Ministry of Strategy and Finance explained that Ambassador Choi Jong-gu will support economic and diplomatic activities that show that the country's economic and financial foundations are strong, such as holding a Korean economic briefing session and contacting international organizations.
Ambassador Choi is an orthodox financial official with experience in domestic and foreign finance, including the chairman of the Financial Services Commission and the chairman of the Export-Import Bank of Korea.
In particular, during the 2008 global financial crisis, he helped Korea overcome the crisis early and stood out as an exchange rate sovereign in the international financial sector.
The Ambassador for International Financial Cooperation is one of the new foreign ambassadors established by the government in 2017.
Foreign Ambassadors are a system that gives ambassador titles to civilian personnel with expertise and awareness in each field and uses them for the government's diplomatic activities.
It is an unpaid honorary position that only gives the ambassador's name, and the term of office is usually one year.
The government appointed Shin Je-yoon, former chairman of the Financial Services Commission, as the ambassador for international financial cooperation in January 2017, when former President Park Geun Hye was suspended due to the impeachment.
The government will soon appoint an ambassador for international financial cooperation, followed by an ambassador for international investment cooperation.
