Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence in the first trial for publishing false information ahead of the last presidential election.
The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Lee to one year in prison and two years of probation in the first trial on charges of violating the election law today (15th).
First of all, the court found Lee's statement that he did not play golf with Kim Moon-ki, the former head of Seongnam Urban Development Corporation's Development Division 1, false and intentional because he played golf.
However, regarding the remarks that he did not know the former director Kim when he was mayor of Seongnam, he was found not guilty, saying, "It seems that the representative Lee spoke to the purpose of acknowledging some of the acts of communication."
Then, regarding the remarks that he was threatened by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to change the use of the Baekhyun-dong project site, Lee himself raised the use and judged it false, saying that he could not be considered threatened.
The court criticized CEO Lee for saying that he was guilty of making false statements in the name of an explanation at a time when related suspicions were of public interest and that he had a great impact and spread through broadcasting media.
However, he explained the reason for the sentencing, saying that he was not elected president and had no history of punishment beyond fines.
If Lee is convicted of a fine of more than 1 million won, he will lose his parliamentary seat and be deprived of his right to run for the next presidential election for five years, making it impossible for him to run for the next presidential election.
In addition, if a sentence of imprisonment probation or higher is confirmed, the right to vote and run for election will be restricted for 10 years.
In addition, if the fine of more than 1 million won is confirmed, the Democratic Party of Korea will have to return 43.4 billion won in the last presidential election, which was compensated by the National Election Commission.
