NHRC said, "Forcing transgender male high school students to use female students' rooms is discriminatory."

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea recommended that the superintendent of the school in question come up with gender separation guidelines and measures to strengthen support for LGBTQ students, saying that high school's act of forcing male students to use female students with gender transition constitutes discrimination.

The NHRC said that forcing students to use girls' rooms without providing other alternatives and preventing them from attending the retreat is an act that excludes sexual minority students' right to participate in educational activities.

High school student A, who transitioned from female to male, tried to attend a school retreat in May last year, but the school instructed her to use a female room according to her legal gender, and refused A's request to assign a single room instead.

Mr. A, who had to remain alone at school during the retreat, even self-harmed due to his severe depression and chose to drop out this year.

The school protested that it had no choice but to let other students use boys' rooms because they could be rather uncomfortable, but the NHRC refused to accept it.
