A government delegation with Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol as the chief representative and Environment Minister Kim Wan-seop as the replacement chief representative will participate in the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee for the International Convention to End Plastic Pollution in Busan from the 25th.

The government said the plastic agreement would be the largest multilateral environmental agreement since the United Nations climate change agreement and said it would actively work to reach a deal.

Earlier, the Ministry of Environment said it was also preparing a compromise for the agreement, with plastic consumers and plastic producers sharply confronting each other over whether to specify new plastic production regulations extracted from fossil fuels.

Starting with the opening ceremony on the 25th, the fifth negotiating committee is scheduled to run until the 1st of next month, and there is a possibility that the period may be extended as the parties fail to reach an agreement or additional negotiating committee may be held in Busan due to the failure to reach a deal.

A total of 3,500 people, including government delegations from 170 UN member states, 31 international organizations, industry, civic groups, and academia, will attend the negotiation committee.
