The last negotiations for an international agreement to end plastic pollution began in Busan.

The 5th Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee for the Development of legally binding international documents on plastic pollution, including the marine environment, will be held in BEXCO, Busan, for a week from today.

Ecuador's ambassador to the UK, Luis Bayas Valvidierso, the chairman of the negotiating committee, said in his opening remarks that without meaningful intervention, plastic leaking into nature would double what it is now in 2040, stressing that the decision over the next seven days would make history.

Inger Andersen, secretary-general of the U.N. Environment Program, also said he recently confirmed how important the issue of financial resources is at the U.N. Climate Change Conference, and said it should consider setting up a financial mechanism to support the implementation of the agreement, including multilateral funds.

In a video congratulatory speech, President Yoon Suk Yeol said that it is of paramount importance to unite political will to form an agreement and asked for a new chapter in history.

However, most of the countries that participated in the negotiations have not agreed on the starting point of the negotiations, and most of them believe that it is unclear whether the agreement will be made.
