In Peru, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit is being held for two days.

Inclusive trade and sustainable growth measures are the main agendas, and leaders of each country are wary of the impact of U.S. President-elect Trump's protectionism.

I'm connecting to the international department. Reporter Kim Do-won, please tell us.

The APEC summit, attended by 21 member countries, kicked off in Lima, Peru.

It is the first major international conference since the election of U.S. President Trump, who has put forward protectionism.

Trump insists on U.S. priority, including 60% tariffs on China and 10-20% on all countries,
President Yoon Suk Yeol, who attended the
conference, stressed the importance of a multilateral trading system. Let's listen to it.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau indirectly criticized Trump, saying that trade negotiations should benefit everyone and not approach him in a way that he wants to see a game. Let's listen to it.

[Justin Trudeau / Canadian Prime Minister] If we're negotiating with the United States or other countries and saying, "Well, how do we win and make other countries lose," that's not going to work.]

In a written speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping also stressed that some countries should not be allowed to exercise hegemony.

Although he did not directly mention it, it is believed to be aimed at the U.S. and Trump.

The APEC summit will continue until the 16th local time, and we are interested in whether each country can make a common voice.

Earlier, shortly after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, when former President Trump was first elected, the APEC summit adopted a joint declaration to reject all forms of protectionism.

It's an international conference on economic issues, but as many leaders gather, there will be many separate bilateral meetings?

[Reporter]
Yes, the leaders of each country split their time to engage in active diplomatic activities,

The most notable thing is Chinese President Xi Jinping.

President Xi met with the new Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for the first time,
President
proposed building stable relations, saying that the current Sino-Japanese relationship, which is rapidly changing international circumstances, is at a critical crossroads.

He also met with the Prime Minister of Singapore, the Prime Minister of Thailand and the President of Chile to discuss strengthening economic cooperation.

U.S. President Biden, who is about to leave office, will also meet with Xi soon.

Russia, which has been criticized by the international community for its war in Ukraine, is also an APEC member, but Putin is absent.
