New York oil prices fall on strong dollar amid quiet trading

2024.12.24 AM 06:39
New York oil prices fell as the dollar strengthened ahead of Christmas, with trading less than usual.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate for February delivery closed at $69.24 a barrel, down $0.22 and 0.32% from the previous session.

Brent crude oil for February delivery, which is subject to international market comparisons, closed at $72.63 a barrel, down $0.31 and 0.43% from the previous session.

The dollar index, which reflects the dollar's value against the six major currencies, crossed the 108-point mark again and rose to around 108.3 at one point.

Crude oil is denominated in dollars, so a rise in the value of the dollar could weaken demand for it among buyers using other currencies.
