Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who was on a visit to Russia, hurriedly returned home after his plane crashed in Kazakhstan.
President Aliyev was heading to Russia to attend an informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in St Petersburg, Russia, when he heard about the accident in Russian airspace and ordered his return.
President Aliyev dispatched a delegation to Kazakhstan, including the Minister of Digital Development and Transportation and the Minister of Emergency Situations, to determine the cause of the accident.
He also discussed the situation by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on board.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin called Aliyev to express his condolences for the crash and express his condolences for the dead.
Authorities in Kazakhstan say 67 passengers and crew members were on board the plane, of which more than 30 are believed to have died.
