Former President Desi Bauterser, a South American Suriname dictator who went into hiding after serving a 20-year prison sentence for murder, has died at 79.

"The Suriname government has confirmed the death of former President of the Republic of Suriname through its own investigation and family," Suriname Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin told Reuters on the 25th local time.

Bauterser, who came to power in a bloody military coup in 1980, remained in power as a military dictator until 1987.

He later stepped down under pressure from the international community and served as president until 2020, repeating a second coup and elections.

Former President Bauterser disappeared and disappeared when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison last year for killing 15 opposition politicians and other anti-government figures in the past.
