More than 46,000 people have been killed in Gaza, where the war has been going on for 15 months.
Cease-fire negotiations have progressed to some extent, but more time is known to be needed before a final agreement is reached.

Pope Francis has stepped up his criticism of Israel's attack on Gaza.

On the other hand, the Israeli side countered that airstrikes in Gaza were defending itself against Hamas atrocities.
Amid the cease-fire negotiations, Oman, acting as a mediator, was optimistic about the situation, saying that a cease-fire in Gaza would stabilize the Middle East.
U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken also said negotiations have progressed a lot and hopes to be completed before handing it over to the Trump administration.
However, it is still unclear when true Middle East peace will come, as talks have already been delayed amid similar optimism several times.
