U.S. Big Tech Resists Biden's Expanding Export Control for AI Semiconductors

2025.01.10 AM 08:11
The U.S. tech industry is publicly pushing back against the Biden administration's new regulations to take stronger control of exports of semiconductors for artificial intelligence, saying business growth for U.S. companies could slow.

The New York Times opposes export controls, saying Biden, who is about to leave office, can decide on regulations that have a big economic impact when it costs U.S. companies a lot to follow the new regulations.

The Biden administration will announce new export controls for semiconductors on the 10th as early as Eastern U.S. time.

The new regulations will classify countries around the world into three grades: allies, adversaries and others, allowing only allies, including South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and major Western countries, to import U.S.-made AI semiconductors without restrictions.

Nvidia, Microsoft, and Oracle argue that other countries that have been unable to import U.S.-made semiconductors could import related technologies such as AI semiconductors from China, allowing the Chinese AI industry to grow further.
