Director Kim Sung-soo's film "Seoul Spring" will represent Korea at the 97th Academy Film Awards.

The Korean Film Council announced on the 4th that it has selected the movie "Seoul Spring" as its entry for the 97th Academy Film Awards next year.

Regarding the reason for unanimously selecting "Spring in Seoul," the Korea Film Council said, "There was little disagreement on the "completeness of the work" in that it evenly encompasses the dramatic fun of the film dealing with tension, the directing ability to maximize actors' acting feast as mise-en-scène's realm, and excellent insights into history."

He also said, "I hope that the illusions and caricatures of evil about the charisma that this work portrays will appeal to the Academy Film Awards as a poetic metaphor in terms of the theme of the film."

Only one film per country can be submitted for the Academy International Feature Film category. Earlier, director Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" won the award for the first time in 2020, director Park Chan-wook's film "Decision to Break Up" was selected as the representative of Korea in 2022, and "Concrete Utopia" last year.

The movie "Seoul Spring" depicts the period of the military revolt on December 12, 1979, a fateful turning point in the modern history of the Republic of Korea, and is a nine-hour screen transfer of the new military forces who staged a coup and their counterparts.

The film was invited to major foreign film festivals such as the 23rd New York Asian Film Festival and the 26th Woodyne Far East Film Festival, and recorded a cumulative audience of 13 million in Korea alone.
