Britain's last coal-fired power plant will be shut down and dismantled after 56 years.

Britain is the first G7 country to completely stop coal-fired power generation.

Britain's Deputy Secretary of Energy, Security and Carbon Neutrality Michael Shanks said the closure of the coal-fired power plant was the end of an era and thanked coal workers for contributing to the power supply for more than 140 years.

The British government has been pushing to close coal-fired power plants in line with the goal of decarbonizing the power generation sector by 2030 and achieving national economic carbon neutrality by 2050.

In Europe, Sweden and Belgium have already suspended coal-fired power generation, with Italy planning to stop by next year, France by 2027, Canada by 2030 and Germany by 2038.

Coal-fired power accounted for 80% of Britain's electricity supply in 1990 but fell to 39% in 2012 and to 1% last year.

Last year, UK electricity generation accounted for 34.7% of gas generation, 32.8% of wind and solar power, 13.8% of nuclear power and 11.6% of bioenergy.
