U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken stressed that if the U.S. is to confront revisionist forces such as Russia, North Korea, China and Iran, it must maintain a diplomatic stance that values alliances even if the regime changes.

In a contribution to Foreign Affairs, Blinken diagnosed that a few countries, including Russia, Iran, North Korea and China, are engaged in fierce competition to define a new era as they try to change the principles underlying the international system.

He also pointed out that these countries are trying to resolve territorial disputes by force and weaponize other countries' economic and energy dependence in order to solidify internal autocratic rule and build their sphere of influence abroad.

Blinken stressed that the Biden administration has reinvigorated overseas alliances to build a stronger geopolitical presence than it did four years ago, but that it must give allies reliable certainty even if the regime changes to counter a revisionist state going forward.

He added that the U.S. choice in the late 2020s would determine whether the U.S. and alliance would outperform revisionist forces or allow the vision of revisionist forces to define the 21st century.
