German Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who has consistently voiced opposition to the coalition's economic policies.
Lindner, the leader of the pro-business Free Democrats, has been at loggerheads with coalition partners the Social Democrats and Greens over his calls for reducing welfare, including refugee benefits and unemployment benefits, and lowering corporate taxes.
It is unclear whether the LDP will leave the coalition immediately, but local media reported that LDP ministers are due to resign soon.
Mr. Scholz said he would propose a vote of confidence in him to the federal parliament next January.
