Google Maps, Google's map application, has been updated, prompting complaints that secret military bases in Ukraine have been accidentally exposed.

According to the British daily Telegraph on the 4th, Andriy Kovalenko, director of the Center for Confidential Response under the National Security and Defense Commission of Ukraine, claimed on Telegram that Russia is already "actively distributing" the images to its troops after Google exposed a secret Ukrainian military base to Google Maps.

Criticising Google as irresponsible, Kovalenko added, "Google is showing an updated map image that indicates the location of our military facilities, and we are contacting (Google) to quickly correct this."

In a later statement, he said a Google representative had been contacting the Ukrainian side but did not elaborate on what military facilities had been exposed.

Russian military bloggers have shared photos of Ukrainian military facilities exposed to Google Maps, claiming they are new air defense systems near Kyiv.

The Google Maps satellite image released by Russian bloggers was confirmed to be a U.S.-made Patriot missile as of September 28 last year.

The facility was not seen in Google Maps satellite images prior to that date, the Telegraph reported.

A Russian blogger defending the war in Ukraine posted a statement from the head of the Kovalenko center, who said the Ukrainian military base had been exposed, mocking it by writing "Tomorrow will come and you will die" with an emoji of joy.

Google is offering free satellite images or aerial photographs through Google Maps, and the Telegraph said it has reached out to Google and its parent company, Alphabet, to respond to the matter but has received no response.
