With Greece's second-largest city, Thessaloniki, opened yesterday (November 30) local time, ancient ruins discovered at the construction site have been unveiled at the subway station.
Thessaloniki Benizelu station exhibited Roman cemeteries excavated during the construction period and market ruins of the Byzantine Empire.
Construction on the subway, which began in 2006, was halted when these ruins were found in the middle, and the tunnel was dug more than 30 meters deeper than the original design to prevent the destruction of the ruins.
Other than Athens, Thessaloniki is the first city in Greece to have a subway built.
