Lee Chang-yong, governor of the Bank of Korea, said he was strongly shocked by President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of emergency martial law, saying, "I thought it was a deepfake video."
In an interview with the British Economist on the 12th, Lee said, "When I heard the announcement of martial law on television on the same day, it was hard to believe that the broadcaster was hacking."
On declaring martial law, he called it "unnecessary and unimaginable mistake" and said he was "very embarrassed."
However, Lee stressed that the impact of the situation on the economy will be limited and that "South Korea has a system that can solve economic problems regardless of political issues."
Meanwhile, Governor Lee held an emergency meeting on macroeconomic and financial issues (F4 meeting) with Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, Financial Services Commission Chairman Kim Byung-hwan, and Financial Supervisory Service Director Lee Bok-hyun on the 13th to check the financial and foreign exchange markets.
The government and the Bank of Korea are actively responding to market stability by running F4 meetings every day after martial law.
In addition, we plan to maintain a 24-hour financial market inspection system and continue stabilization measures such as unlimited liquidity supply.
