background
Ukraine's Kharkiv hit by Russian guided bomb attack,
Part of the
building was burned and windows were shattered.

Dozens of casualties, including children, occurred yesterday (8th) afternoon local time when Russian forces dropped guided bombs.

[Natalia Kudova / Local resident: I heard something flying and ran away to the pit behind the building with my child. I was sitting and protecting the child when I heard the sound of falling apart and there were pieces of glass everywhere. And that was it.]

Russian forces have also entered the outskirts of the eastern frontline city of Toretsk.

If Toretsk falls, Russian forces will likely be able to cut off the main logistical routes of Ukrainian forces on the eastern front.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutter has called for further support, warning that Ukraine may face its harshest winter as Russia continues to mount a major attack on Ukraine's core energy infrastructure.

[Marc Rutter / Secretary-General of NATO] All we have to do is focus on what NATO can do. What NATO can do is strengthen Ukraine's power with sufficient military support.]

In this regard, leaders of major Western countries such as the United States, Britain, and France will gather in Germany on the 12th to discuss military support measures.

Of particular interest is whether to approve the use of long-range missiles among the additional support, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that the West will retaliate as soon as it approves the use of long-range missiles to Ukraine.

Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grusico also pointed out that the risk of a direct conflict between Russia and NATO has increased.

In particular, the so-called hotline and other dialogue channels between Russia and NATO are for emergencies rather than easing tensions, so a peaceful resolution is still not expected to be easy.
