The U.S. government has expressed concern over reports of North Korean troops sending troops to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"We cannot independently verify that report," National Security Council, NSC National Security and Communications Adviser John Kirby said in a telephone briefing on the 15th local time when asked whether the report was true.

"These reports concern us," he said. "If the idea that North Korean soldiers are fighting for Russia is true, it shows a significant strengthening of defense relations between North Korea and Russia."

Kirby also explained, "We have said for months that relations between North Korea and Russia are growing and deepening."

"If the reports are true, they can be categorized as a new level of urgency shown by Putin, who is trying to make progress in Ukraine," he added.

Ukrainian media reported that the Russian military, which invaded Ukraine earlier, is operating a 3,000-strong battalion-level unit with North Korean troops.

On the 3rd, six North Korean soldiers were also included among the 20 Russian soldiers killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on the Donetsk front.
