When a Chinese cargo ship sank in northern Taiwan due to Typhoon Kongrey, Taiwan's maritime police rushed to rescue 17 sailors.

According to Taiwanese media, including the Free Times, on the 31st, the Chinese cargo ship departed from Jilin Port in northern Taiwan with three cranes at around 8 a.m. on the 29th.

The cargo ship stopped at around 11 a.m. on the same day in waters 4.4 kilometers north-northwest of Yeryugot in Shinbei, Taiwan, due to lack of power caused by typhoon Kongrey and sea currents.

The captain of the cargo ship then asked Taiwan's maritime authorities for help at around 8:29 p.m. when he was swept away by the waves and pushed to a distance of 1.1 kilometers.Upon receiving the

report, three ships, including a 3,000-ton Iranian ship, were deployed to rescue them.

Taiwanese media reported that the vessel is feared to be damaged by marine pollution from the oil leaked as it broke down.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's prefectures and cities began to respond to emergency measures at around 8 p.m. the previous day, ordering schools to close across the country ahead of the landing of a large typhoon Kongrey.

As of 11:30 a.m. (local time) on the 31st, the weather department estimated that Kong-rey's central atmospheric pressure and maximum wind speeds reached 925 hPa and 227 km/h, respectively, and would make landfall in the afternoon.
