U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's remarks have been belatedly controversial in connection with Japan's Fukushima region, which was badly damaged by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant explosion.
Trump appeared on the podcast channel "The Joe Rogan Experience" late last month and was discussing nuclear policy when he said "3,000 years can't go into that land," the Asahi Shimbun reported.
Earlier in August, Trump also expressed concern about radioactive contamination in Fukushima, mentioning in a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk that "we were told we could not return to the region for 2,000 years."
In response to these remarks, Fukushima Prefecture Governor Masao Uchibori strongly urged the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. to send accurate information at home and abroad after confirming Trump's remarks at a regular conference on the 11th.
"There is a long fight for the revival of Fukushima," he said, explaining that plans to take out nuclear fuel chunks (devries) from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and discharge contaminated water into the ocean are currently scheduled until March 2045.
"The road to revival will be tough, but we will do our best to do this," he said.
