Amid a surge in electricity demand due to the artificial intelligence industry, the Biden administration has announced a plan to triple its nuclear power generation capacity by 2050.
According to Bloomberg, the Biden administration has laid out a roadmap to increase nuclear power generation capacity to 300 gigawatts by 2050, up from 100.6 gigawatts last year, by building new nuclear power plants, restarting nuclear power plants, and upgrading existing facilities.
In the short term, it aims to operate 35 gigawatts of new nuclear power plants over the next 10 years.
Bloomberg pointed out that President-elect Trump also mentioned the construction of new nuclear power plants during the presidential election, so this trend is likely to be inherited.
Recent surges in power demand for data centers have also led tech giants to seek power, especially Microsoft, which said it would receive power from around 2028 through restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, which had been shut down.
On the other hand, former President Trump's victory in the presidential election, which is fossil fuel-friendly, has made the wind power industry more likely to face difficulties, the New York Times said.
