I'm sure many of you are relieved by the news of the fire over the weekend.
It was dawn yesterday.
A fire broke out in a six-story building in Danwon-gu, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Dozens of people stayed at two accommodations located on the fifth and sixth floors of the building, which was feared to cause major casualties, but fortunately, all 50 people in the building, including guests, were rescued.
In the process, it is evaluated that the quick judgment of the firefighters who were dispatched to the scene could have prevented casualties.
Let's connect one firefighter who did rescue activities at the fire site yesterday and hear about the situation at the time.
Fireman Kim Sung-min, are you connected?
[Kim Sungmin]
Hello.
[Anchor]
How are you? First of all, I would like to say that you worked so hard yesterday. First of all, what was the situation at the scene when you were dispatched yesterday?
[Kim Sungmin]
When we arrived at the site, a large amount of strong flames and black smoke were already erupting from the restaurant on the first floor. And there seemed to be a concern about expanding to the next building, and a large number of rescuers were seen through the window.

I heard that they broke the window in the hallway and did rescue activities after that. Why did you decide to break the window?
[Kim Sungmin]
We have to break the window to release heat and smoke so that we can save our lives quickly and safely by securing a little view, so we broke the window and entered under the judgment of the team leader.
[Anchor]
So you told me that I broke a window to make it a little easier for firefighters to get in, so is breaking a window like this a routine that firefighters usually do at a fire site?
[Kim Sungmin]
It's not a routine that everyone does. In the case of high-rise buildings, smoke moves quickly to the rooftop through the inner stairs. So when we enter, breaking the window and entering is a tactic that we do because it helps us to be faster and more on-site.

So, the accommodation was on the 5th and 6th floors of the building, and I think there must have been helpers crowded in this accommodation. Please also tell me what the rescue situation was like at the time.
[Kim Sungmin]
First of all, I thought there would be a lot of visitors to the accommodation because it was the weekend. And when we entered the hallway, the hallway was already full of thick smoke, making it impossible for users to evacuate on their own, and it seemed urgent to rescue isolated users.
[Anchor]
It was last August. There was also a fire in Bucheon, and there was a death at that time, but was there any training from firefighters for similar situations after that?
[Kim Sungmin]
First of all, we conducted a lot of simulation training on similar situations. And during daily training, I learned a lot about fire suppression and lifesaving in high-rise buildings and multi-use businesses.
[Anchor]
That's all for today.
Once again, I would like to say that you worked hard.
Thank you for talking today.
I talked to Kim Sung-min, a firefighter from Ansan Fire Station.
