The first snow, about nine days later than last year, was the heaviest snowfall ever.

It is the first time since the observation that more than 20cm of snow fell in Seoul in November.

Another heavy snow was predicted overnight.

This time, we will look at the current status and prospects of snow with a reporter.

Jeong Hye-yoon, a weather disaster reporter, is here. Hello

Even before the start of winter, it is truly a 'heavy snow crisis'.

I'm sure a lot of people were surprised today. It was the first heavy snow in November in 117 years?

[Reporter]
Yes, it is. It was a really surprising amount of snow.

117 years means it's the first time we've had so much snow in November since weather observations began.

So you all saw a lot of snow in November for the first time, and you can't help but be surprised.

It is the first time in 14 years that a heavy snow warning has been issued in Seoul since 2010. On January 4, 2010, 25 centimeters of snow fell, and this is the first time such a big snow has fallen since then.

In fact, unusual weather continues to appear in summer and fall following spring this year.

Recently, the temperature in autumn has been considerably higher than in previous years. The sea level temperature around our country was also very high. In the meantime, as the cold air accompanied by a strong chill fell south from the north, the atmosphere became unstable and snow clouds developed stronger.

In particular, the snowfall exceeded 20cm inland, including Seoul, around the time of the commute,

As of now, the snowfall is 26.7cm in Seoul. Pyeongchang is also 24cm. The higher amount of snow inland is due to the wind direction.

Usually in winter, when the cold air goes south, snow clouds are created on the west coast due to sea fog, but this time, the wind of the west wind strengthened somewhat unusually, and snow clouds flowed deep inland.

Shall we look at the screen for a moment? It's about snow and wind this morning. You can see

Purple moving snow clouds, arrows in the wind direction, and the wind blows mainly in the west wind in the morning and comes inland. As a result, most of the snow comes inland to the metropolitan area such as Seoul, Gangwon-do. Snowfall has also increased further.

There is a possibility that the amount of snow will increase in southern Gyeonggi and some inland areas, following Chungcheong and Honam tonight.

[Anchor]
Then how much more snow does it fall overnight?

[Reporter]
First of all, as I told you, snow of more than 25cm has been forecast not only in Honam and the west coast, but also in southern Gyeonggi Province.

And up to 10cm of snow was expected in Seoul.

So, as much snow as predicted last night is likely to fall once again.

In particular, it is expected that the temperature will drop further this time, so there is a possibility that the fallen snow will freeze as it is.

If you look at the current special report, a heavy snow warning is in place toward Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.

And the southeastern part of Gyeonggi Province. As you saw earlier, I showed you that snow clouds will continue overnight toward the southern part of Gyeonggi Province.

The heavy snow warning is now maintaining the warning because the band of snow clouds is expected to pass through southern Gangwon and Chungbuk.

Since the heavy snow warning is warning that it is dangerous for areas where snow is expected to fall more than 20cm, people in this area need to be a little more prepared, and the heavy snow warning is being maintained in the rest of the area.

There may be another crisis tonight, so we need to be more prepared until tomorrow morning's work, you can see it like this.

But the snow problem this time is a wet snow.

There have already been casualties due to the wet snow.

Why is the snow so humid this time?

[Reporter]
Yes, as I mentioned earlier, the sea temperature around the Korean Peninsula is currently very high.

On top of that, there's a very cold air from the north, accompanied by the Arctic chill, and when these two air with such a large temperature difference meet, they create a stronger snow cloud, and they're filled with more moisture.

I think it would be easy to understand if you look at the case where steam steams on hot water in bathhouses and saunas.

Usually, snow clouds are created as they pass over the sea, called the lake effect.

When cold air comes down to the northwest, snow clouds are usually formed near the west coast of Chungnam and the west coast of Honam.

When the cold air flows south to the northeast, snow clouds are created in Yeongdong.

This is why it snows a lot in two areas: the west coast and the east coast in winter.

In particular, such humid snow weighs more than three times as much as construction.

Usually, the weight of wet snow in an area of 1m in width is about 300kg, which is more than twice the weight of construction.

In particular, if you look at the next screen,
If 50cm of snow accumulates in a 10m wide and 10m long vinyl house, the weight of the snow will reach 30 tons.

Two 15-ton trucks and a telephone pole are the same as 30 weeks up.

Even if more than 20cm of snow fell like this, it is about half of it, and this is enough weight to cause damage, so thorough preparation is required.

[Anchor]
But I think it will be dangerous if humid snow flows inland like this.

[Reporter]
Yes, it is. The west and east coasts are usually snowy areas in winter, so they are always well prepared, but inland areas such as Seoul are not.

That's why it's more dangerous.

This is especially true when there is a lot of wet snow inland like this.

It is a rather unusual case when the cold air is further strengthened by the west wind rather than the northwest wind, but snow clouds have flowed inland as a result of the barometric valley.

Usually, continental high pressure affects three to four days and then turns into a mobile high pressure, turning into a west wind, and snow on the west coast often flows inland.

This year, due to the warming trend, there is a view that the possibility of snow clouds strengthening from the sea could increase due to early deterioration of continental high pressure, which could lead to inland inflow.

The video of the report on the 26th, such as strong winds and hail, but yesterday was very windy and there were places where hail fell, how about now?

[Reporter]
Yes, yesterday, I also included a video of the viewer report while delivering the situation through a report.

In fact, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., a video of hail with strong winds was reported to YTN. This is the screen that's going out right now.

Hail accompanied by strong winds fell in Ilsan and Goyang City, and was also observed in some parts of Gangwon Province. The wind was around 30 meters per second yesterday, and typhoon-like strong winds blew on the coast and inland.

Due to this, strong wind warnings were issued for most of the coast and inland areas and wind and wind warnings were issued for the sea, and this phenomenon was very unusual in November.

Forecasters even said it was the first time in more than 30 years of forecasting a hail in November.

Yesterday, mild air was located in the south, and the temperature difference became very large as the cold air went south to the north, and the atmospheric instability intensified.

Because of this, hail was created as the wind became stronger.

Now, although not as much as yesterday, the wind is still strong at sea and inland. There are high waves at the sea that are at the level of a special wind advisory, and the wind is blowing more than 15m per second to Chungcheong and southern Jeju Island, so caution is needed. A special report is also being issued.

[Anchor]
I'm worried about the cold in the middle of the snow. The freezing cold is getting worse?

[Reporter]
Yes, it is.

The temperature in Seoul this morning was -1.3 degrees.

Tomorrow, we will go down to -2 degrees.

After that, the cold will peak at -4 degrees on Friday.

On weekends and holidays, the cold below zero is expected to continue around -2 degrees Celsius.

In the period of December next week, the cold below zero is expected to continue after the snow rain in the early part of the week, so the cold weather is expected to continue for a total of 10 days compared to previous years.

[Anchor]
But wasn't it predicted to be cozy this winter? It's cold and snowy from the beginning, and the weather is not easy, right?

[Reporter]
That's how it was forecasted in the overall long-term outlook.

However, there was a prospect that the temperature could drop to the northern cold around the beginning and the third week as the cold weather periodically moves south in December.
The Korea Meteorological Administration is also thinking about the range of temperature fluctuations due to

If you look at it as a whole, like last fall, it is mild, but I think it can feel even more cold if the chill comes down a little.

In addition, if the cold comes down in such a mild state, snow clouds may develop stronger, increase in volume, or unusual hail or strong winds may develop due to atmospheric instability, resulting in more musical instrument images.

In particular, according to a recent study by a domestic researcher, this winter is a time when warming and La Niña overlap, which usually brings early cold in La Niña and warming brings an increase in temperature at the Earth's sea level, and the two effects overlap, which are expected to lead to large temperature fluctuations.

However, if the repetition period is short in autumn, it is expected that it will be repeated for more than a week in winter.

When the cold comes, mild weather for more than a week can be like this for more than a week.

In fact, this week is cold all week, and the cold weather is expected to last for nearly 10 days until next week.
It is predicted that it will improve after
and that there is a possibility of another downward trend in the second half of December.

[Anchor]
I'm worried that the weather is changing more than I expected. Recently, the warming is severe and the sea surface temperature around Korea is said to be high.
Is there a prospect that this weather could get worse in the future
?

[Reporter]
Yes, the global temperature is the highest ever this year, as recently announced by the World Meteorological Organization, and the temperature in Korea is rising more steeply than the global standard.

Especially the sea level temperature.

It's 2.5 times higher these days.

In fact, it did not go north to Korea, but in November, for the first time ever, a typhoon occurred on the South Sea and moved north.

And the record for the longest tropical night was set due to the high sea level temperature and the inflow of large amounts of water vapor.
Heavy rain clouds of hundreds of years have also occurred on some southern coasts
.

Climate change is progressing so fast that domestic scientists have not recently predicted an increase in sea level temperatures around the Korean Peninsula.

First, if you look at the temperature, it's gone up by about 1.5 degrees over the past 100 years, and you see the graph going up more clearly as you go back, right?

There is a PDO index that can predict the sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula to some extent.

It is a phenomenon in which the sea surface temperature in the North Pacific changes periodically over decades, and if this cycle is a negative pattern, the sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula is high, and if it is a positive pattern, it is lowered.

It's been in a negative state for the last 10 years, and it's been at its peak recently. This is why the surroundings of the Korean Peninsula were so hot, but if this continues in the cycle, there is a possibility that it will return to a positive pattern in the next 1-2 years, which could die down for a while. However, if it returns to a negative pattern 10 years later after 2040, it warns that it could bring about a climate disaster with stronger intensity than now.

I'm worried that the greatest climate changes that have been occurring in Korea recently may be foreshadowing such a climate disaster.

Scientists are emphasizing that we need to be prepared not to get worse in the meantime.
