"I want a child even if it's single." British pregnancy procedures tripled in 10 years.

In the UK, the number of "single" women without husbands or partners has tripled in 10 years to undergo procedures for pregnancy, including artificial insemination.

According to statistics from the UK Human Reproduction and Embryology Administration (HFEA), as of 2022, 4,969 single women out of 55,560 women who received donor artificial insemination (DI) or IVF (in vitro fertilization) procedures, more than triple the 1,534 in 2012.

The proportion of single women who received the procedure increased from 3.2% to 8.9%.

Almost 1 in 10 women in pregnancy procedures have no spouse or partner.

The number of women treated with same-sex partners more than doubled from 1,442 to 3,504 during this period, and the rate increased from 3.0% to 6.3%.

As a result, the proportion of women with male partners has decreased from 93.9% (45,437) to 84.7% (47,87).

"It may be because social stigma has diminished and priorities have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic," Claire Ettinghausen, director of HFEA's Strategic Enterprises, told the Daily Telegraph of the phenomenon.

"As more and more single women have been receiving fertility treatment in recent years and conversations about infertility or infertility treatment have become more widespread in society, even single people feel ready to look into pregnancy-related options," he added.
