Japan to run for election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2043

The Japanese government has said it will run in the election of a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council in 2032 and 2043.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Keiichiro Tachibana, a deputy spokesman for the Japanese government, said at a press conference.

He then explained the background of the decision to run, saying that as competition over the election of non-permanent members of the Security Council is intensifying every year, more thorough preparations and activities have become important so far.

Japan has already expressed its intention to run for the 2032 UNSC election as a non-permanent member, ending its two-year term this month.

Deputy Minister Tachibana said he would continue to lead discussions on Security Council reform and work to strengthen the functions of the United Nations as a whole.

The Security Council consists of five permanent members who can veto various discussions, including the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia, and 10 non-permanent members with a two-year term.

Non-permanent members cannot exercise only the veto power given to the five permanent members, but can participate in discussing and voting on pending UN Security Council issues.
