Food poisoning bacteria were detected in some enoki mushrooms that were exported, and customs clearance was often denied in some countries.

The Rural Development Administration has developed a technology that can effectively remove harmful microorganisms that may occur during the cultivation process.

It is a company that grows and exports enoki mushrooms.

U.S. exports have been hit by a sharp drop since 2020.

At that time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the FDA restricted imports, saying they detected food poisoning bacteria in 43% of Korean enoki mushrooms.

[Sung Won-kyung / CEO of Enoki mushroom grower: If Listeria bacteria (food poisoning bacteria) are detected right away, it will cause major difficulties in farms because export routes will be blocked.]

To solve this problem, the Rural Development Administration has come forward.

The Rural Development Administration confirmed the optimal sterilization conditions in which microorganisms completely disappear if the medium, an artificial culture soil containing nutrients that grow mushrooms, is heat-treated at 121 degrees for more than 30 minutes.

[Choi Song-yi / Rural Development Administration Research Institute of Hazardous Biology: Through joint research with Kyungsang University, we have developed a program to suggest standard conditions for sterilizing the medium and evaluate it]

We have also developed a large-capacity washer that cleans the agricultural material "cone" used to prevent the spread of enoki mushrooms.Up to 20,000 pieces of

cone are used a day, because if not washed properly, the risk of spreading harmful microorganisms increases.

[Lee Hyun-dong / Agricultural Research Center, Rural Development Administration: You can wash 2,000 to 5,000 sheets in one wash. I thought it was effective to remove foreign substances between the cone and the cone in the form of air bubbles below.]

The Rural Development Administration said it plans to distribute related technologies to enoki mushroom growers and expects a recovery in exports.
