Former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil was re-arrested after being sentenced to two years in prison in the first trial for receiving illegal political funds.
'Research Institute for Peace and Living', that is, a non-profit corporation for the public interest,
Since January 2020, he has been found guilty of receiving a whopping 763 million won in sponsorship for nearly two years.
The court pointed out that Song had a history of receiving political funds and being punished in the past, and that he did not show an attitude of denying and reflecting on the charges.
However, the suspicion of "spreading money envelopes" at the Democratic National Convention, which was pointed out as the peak, was found not guilty.
The court did not recognize the evidence capability of the recorded mobile phone files of former Democratic Party Secretary-General Lee Jung-geun, which was the beginning of the investigation.
The court said most of the evidence presented by the prosecution was illegally collected, and that it was inevitable to exclude the capacity of evidence to curb illegal raids and prevent a recurrence.
[Song Young-gil / Former Democratic Party leader: I will take political responsibility.' I left the party in this position and have fought lonely on the street until now. But legally, it's a fact I didn't know. I have never been involved.' I have consistently insisted on this....]
The prosecution is in a position to decide whether to appeal after reviewing the ruling, and attention is being paid to how the results of the first trial will affect the investigation of lawmakers suspected of receiving money envelopes, which have not yet been summoned.
