President Yoon Suk Yeol and the new Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba held their first summit in Laos on the occasion of attending the ASEAN-related summit.

The two leaders agreed to further develop bilateral relations through active communication, including shuttle diplomacy.

Let's hear from President Yoon and Prime Minister Ishiba both at the summit.

[Yoon Suk Yeol / President: Since my visit to Japan in March last year, Korea-Japan relations have made great strides. Following his predecessor, Prime Minister Kishida, I hope that we will promote the development of Korea-Japan relations through active and close communication, including shuttle diplomacy, with the Prime Minister. In particular, 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan. We hope that we will present a promising future image of bilateral relations and cooperate closely with the Prime Minister so that the people of the two countries can feel the leap in bilateral relations.

[Shigeru Ishiba / Japanese Prime Minister: I would like to further develop the bilateral relationship that President Yoon and former Prime Minister Kishida have greatly improved. I hope we will work closely with the president while also utilizing the shuttle diplomacy you mentioned.
