National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik held a preparatory meeting for the Pan-National Council to reform the broadcasting law, including improving the governance structure of public broadcasting, and appointed Lee Joon-woong, a professor of journalism and information at Seoul National University, as the preparatory chairman.
Chairman Woo repeatedly urged the Democratic Party of Korea to participate in the council along with the power of the people, saying that while the ruling and opposition parties' conflicts over the Broadcasting Act have been repeated, the antagonism and confusion at the broadcasting site have exceeded the danger level.
In July, when the ruling and opposition parties were at odds over the four laws of broadcasting and the appointment of the board of directors of public broadcasting, Chairman Woo proposed the formation of a pan-national consultative body in which the political community, civil society, and the media participate evenly, asking to design a reasonable broadcasting system with a cooling period.
