Acting President Han Deok-soo, who convened an extraordinary Cabinet meeting, exercised his first veto on six controversial bills.

[Han Deok-soo / Acting President: We decided to put the spirit of the Constitution and the future of the country first]The six bills that exercised the right to reject
are the Grain Control Act, the Agricultural and Fishery Price Stabilization Act, the Agricultural and Fishery Disaster Countermeasures Act, the Agricultural and Fishery Disaster Insurance Act, and the National Assembly Testimony Appraisal Act and the National Assembly Act.

All of them were bills led by the opposition party last month amid strong opposition from the ruling party.

[Choo Kyung-ho / Former floor leader of the People's Power (last month's 28th): Despite our opposition in the standing committee including the Grain Management Act, the opposition party's unilateral enforcement....]

Acting President Han Deok-soo explained the reason for the veto, saying, "I listened to a lot of opinions before the decision."

In the case of the so-called "Farm 4 Act," which includes the price of agricultural and fishery products and the government's compensation for disaster damage, it is concerned about oversupply and huge financial burden due to distortion of market function.

In addition, the revision of the National Assembly Act laid the groundwork for not having to comply with the Dec. 2 deadline for resolution of the budget bill set by the Constitution,
The revision of the National Assembly Testimony Appraisal Act
emphasized that there is a possibility of excessive accompanying orders and infringement of basic rights.

[Han Deok-soo / Acting President: I am very sad to ask the National Assembly to reconsider the six bills at a time when cooperation between the government and the ruling and opposition parties is more urgent than ever]

The remaining controversial bills are the Insurrection Special Prosecutor Act and the Special Prosecutor Kim Gun-hee Act.

The deadline for deciding whether to veto the two bills is January 1 next year, and the controversy is expected to continue as the opposition party is hinting at the possibility of impeachment.
